Phased Re-opening Period of Several Recreation and Athletics Facilities Begins June 1

We want to extend a sincere thank you to all of our Wellness Members this past year as the necessary but difficult decision was made to prioritize Recreational Facility access to students. This decision was made due to the required reduction in capacity numbers because of COVID. We are continuing to operate under capacity reduction guidelines from New York State, Tompkins County, and the University. However, we are excited to begin entering a phased expanded re-opening period beginning June 1.

Phase 1: Beginning June 1

Information For Employees

All Employees will be able to access the following Recreation and Athletics facilities on-campus:

  • Helen Newman Hall gymnasium. Badminton and Volleyball nets will be set up during Open rec hours. You can access badminton and volleyball equipment at the issue room window if you have an active Wellness Recreation Membership.
  • Helen Newman Hall Bowling Center.
  • Grumman Squash courts opening June 10. You can access racquets and balls at the Teagle issue room window if you have an active Wellness Recreation Membership.
  • Lindseth Climbing Wall in Bartels Hall (see COE’s website for information about climbing wall passes, hours of operation, and more). Climbing wall passes are discounted for Wellness Recreation Membership holders.
  • Kane Complex Outdoor track. This track is open from 11am-1pm Monday through Friday and is located near Bartels Hall.
  • Schoellkopf Stadium steps. Schoellkopf stadium is open for an intense stair workout sun up to sun down Monday through Friday.

Additionally, all Employees who currently hold active Wellness Recreation Memberships will be able to make up to 6 reservations per week through the IM Leagues reservation system to use the fitness centers, take part in CFC in-person on-site group fitness classes, and use the pools.

Please note the following:

  • 6 ft. Distancing Requirement: Reduced capacity limits due to 6ft distancing guidelines are required in our facilities. For the pools, this reduces capacity to only 6 individuals per 50 minute open lap swim time block. The fitness centers and in-person on-site group fitness classes are also operating at reduced capacity due to 6ft distancing guidelines.
  • Reservations for Fitness Centers, In-Person Group Fitness Classes and Pools: Reservations are required to use these facilities. Please read about reservation processes on our website. You are required to make a reservation prior to accessing the fitness centers, CFC in-person on-site group fitness classes (beginning June 14), and pools. If you do not have a reservation, you will not be allowed to use that facility at that time.
  • Summer Hours: Summer hours of operation are underway. This reduces the number of facilities that are open as well as the hours of operation. Please check the website for the early summer schedule. Additional expansion of hours/sites is occurring as the summer progresses and as changes to facility guidelines, facility utilization, and number of summer employees available to work evolves.
  • Pausing New Membership Sales: The sale of new Wellness Recreation memberships is paused June 1-June 15 (2 weeks). During this time we will be evaluating reservations in relation to capacity limits and making a decision on the date new membership sales can resume.
  • Masking in Recreation and Athletics Facilities: In compliance with recently announced University guidelines, individuals no longer need to wear masks in the Recreation facilities if they are fully vaccinated. Masks still need to be worn by individuals who are not fully vaccinated and 6ft distancing still needs to be maintained.
  • Locker Rooms: Helen Newman Hall’s locker rooms are open. Limited shower access will begin the second week of June. Teagle Hall’s locker rooms will be opening June 10 and will include limited shower access. An all-gender restroom is open and is located across from the Teagle's Issue room. Appel Hall’s restrooms located inside the fitness centers are open.
  • Issue Rooms: Helen Newman Hall’s issue room is open. Towel service and clothing loop service is not available. Limited equipment rental (ex. badminton racquets and birdies, volleyballs, tennis racquets and balls) is available. Teagle Hall’s issue room is open.
