Diabetes Awareness Campaign
In recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Cornell Wellness will be giving you a month of “Diabetes Awareness”. Throughout the month of November, Wellness will be providing information on becoming more aware of the fast-growing epidemic, Diabetes. Wellness will show you through cooking demos, lectures, tabling events, and live videos what Diabetes is, the different types, signs & symptoms, risk factors, and how together we can prevent/stop the spread of this disease. Check out the weekly highlights below.
Week 1 (Nov. 4-10) What is Diabetes?
On this week of "Diabetes Awareness," Wellness will provide information on what Diabetes is, the types of Diabetes, and some stats. On Thursday, November 7, Wellness will hold 2 tabling events, both at Teagle Hall, right outside the multipurpose room. One will be held from 7:30am-9am, and the next one will be from 11:30am-1:00pm. Come participate in Diabetes Awareness Jeopardy, learn if you're at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes, and earn your chance to win a prize there on the spot plus be entered in for a chance to win prizes at the end of the month valued up to $100.
Week 2 (Nov. 11-17) Signs & Symptoms/ Risk Factors:
This week will focus on the common signs/ symptoms of Diabetes plus some risk factors for those that are at a high risk for developing Diabetes. Join Wellness in welcoming Nancy Peckenpaugh, a Ceritified Diabetes Educator(CDE), in rm. G10 at Biotech, for a talk on this fast growing epidemic (Watch Nancy's recorded presentation through Facebook). Also, tune into Wellness Director, Kerry Howell, for a 30 minute talk through Facebook Live on risk factors and signs/symptoms of Diabetes (Watch Kerry's recorded presentation through Facebook), on November 14, 11-11:30am.
Week 3 (Nov. 18-24) Prevention/ Maintenance:
On Week 3 of "Diabetes Awareness," Wellness will give you some tips and tricks for lowering your risk of developing Diabetes. Also, we will provide information on what to do if you have already been diagnosed with Diabetes. Throughout the week participate in a fitness challenge. Let us know how you're decreasing your risk of developing Diabetes. Post your workouts, walks, rolls, or any type of physical activity to the Cornell Wellness Facebook page with #CornellWellnessDiabetesAwareness and be entered to win prizes at the end of the month valued up to $100. The more participations, the more times you're entered to win. Join Wellness staff and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), Hannah Feinberg, for a Diabetes friendly cooking demo on Tuesday, November 19, in 701 Clark Hall, from 12-1:00pm (registration available). End the week with a live Zoom presentation with Wellness staff Ruth Merle-Doyle and Hannah Feinberg, on Friday, November 22, 12-12:45pm, for a talk on fitness and nutrition specific to Gestational Diabetes. Week 4 (Nov. 25-30) Preparing For Thanksgiving:
On the last week of "Diabetes Awareness," we want to hear from you! What are your favorite Diabetes friendly Thanksgiving meals/desserts or any Diabetes friendly meal/dessert you like to make. Post these meals to the Cornell Wellness Facebook page, and be entered for a chance to win prizes at the end of the month valued up to $100.
